Samuel Johnson rightly said that "Promise, large promise, is the soul of an advertisement" And the innocuous viewer who believes in the advertisement takes it for granted that he will achieve what he wants by simply imitating whats been shown in the television.Marketing is all about making your customers believe in your product and marketing companies resort to various strategies to make that possible. The average Indian takes it for granted that whatever is shown is reality. But alas,it couldn't be far from truth.

Something similar happened with Sim. Sim was particularly impressed with the Sprite ad which shows a Girl bringing a dog and 2 guys who try to charm her. The ad shows one guy trying to impress the girl by caressing the dog which the girl brings along with her. Then the 2nd guy has a Sprite in his hand and he easily charms the girl because Sprite made the difference.



As Sim had noticed that the girl came for the evening walk with her dog, he decided to use the "Seedhi baat" concept with the girl. He got himself a Sprite and waited at the entrance of the park. When she entered the park he entered the 'besot' zone. I still dont know how he manages to get besotten by the view of 'n' number of girls 'n' number of times. And the heartening fact is that he says its special every time. Never mind mysteries are meant to exist. Anyhow after entering the 'besotten' influence Sim dazedly walked towards her and said "Coming for a walk". She replied "No. My doggie isnt interested now". Sim to this day couldnt decipher as to how the girl took his question "if being addressed to the dog" ,where as in the ad the one drinking Sprite asks a question and the girl answers it favourably. But what got him thinking is the fact that another guy came along with a dog and it changed the whole perception of Sim. The girl's dog started barking at the guy's dog and the other dog retaliated by barking in turn. As each of the owners started controlling their dog's they smiled at each other and began conversing with each other. It ended in them walking together and Sim was left drinking the Sprite. Not only this changed Sim's dislike of 5 sensed dogs ,it also changed his perception of pet dogs. He understood the real meaning of 'leveraging'. Thus he took the inconceivable idea of adopting a dog as a pet.

Soon afterwards, he brought home a pomeranian pup. We had imposed few conditions on Sim for allowing him to bring home the dog. It was agreed that he will alone be responsible for taking care of the dog and its requirement. As any dog owner will know to discipline a dog is no small feat. The owner of the dog has to put in huge effort initially to train the dog and this burden was comfortably passed to Sim.Sim was eager to take the dog to park and check if his investment bears him fruit. But then Gym chipped in with his views that it would be better if Sim trained the dog and then display the dog proudly to the girl. The girl would surely be impressed with the dogs feats and might induce her to talk with Sim. I had a doubt as to whether our objective was making Sim impress the girl or the dog impress the girl but i didnt want to sound pessimistic so I didnt voice my views.

For reasons unknown Sim named the pup 'Rocky'. He felt it gave the pup the macho image of Sylvester Stallone... People say that sometimes their behaviour is co-related with their name. In some way, the Pup too lived up to its name. and Sim came to realize it a bit late. The puppy was very courageous and openly daring. For instance,once Sim was alone at home with pup. I and Jim had gone to our respective home towns. Sim had come home late after a tough day at work... As it was too late to prepare food, he had brought home dinner from a hotel. He kept the food in the hall along with the plate and then took 1 morsel of food before changing himself into more relaxing dress. He came back and found the Pup busy eating the packed dinner. I wonder how Sim's face would have looked at that moment. What was more interesting is Sim's description of the Pup. He said that even though he glared at the Pup, the Pup looked non-chalantly and looked at Sim as if challenging him to a fight if necessary. Fortunately,Sim's childhood experience with the dog helped him avoid getting any extra scar.

Meanwhile,Sim's agenda of bringing home the Pup was bearing fruit. He had taken the Pup for a walk and had seen the girl with her dog. As expected the two dog barked (or) signaled to each other,thus bringing the attention of the girl to Sim and hence started Sim's conversation with her. Sim's joy knew no bounds and he patted his dog lovingly. He introduced himself as working at her office and thus began the friendship of the girl with Sim. For one week, they were in constant conversation. SMS,chat,Mail,Phone, you name the gadget, they were in touch using that.

Whoever has said that "Life is unfair" had a point.And Sim got to know it the hard way. The girl had come once to our home to see Sim. It was in the evening time around 5pm. She rang the door bell and our Pup gave its own barking signal that someone was at the door.Sim went to open the door and was took by surprise on seeing the girl. The girl smiled and came in.She stroked the pup's hair. Sim looked jealously at the dog wishing if he could be in its place.She then handed him a invitation saying that he should definitely come for her engagement next month. You should have seen Sim at the moment. Though the news was disturbing to Sim, I and Jim had a difficult time controlling our laughter on seeing his face.

We excused ourself and went outside lest we should laugh before the girl and make a fool of ourselves. Sim later thanked us for sharing his sadness. he had assumed that we too were highly dejected on hearing the news and hence had gone outside so to let go of our frustration. I wonder how Sim managed to talk to the girl. Anyhow,from what we heard he proceeded to make Tea for her (The girl was risking her life by drinking it) and then after a small chit-chat, she went back home. Its not as if he was dating the girl so the shock was not that damaging. Yet we felt that Sim's shock was quite profound. The reason for it (which we came to know later) was that when the girl had told him the news, his immediate concern was regarding the future of the Pup. The very reason he had bought the Pup had gone awry hence he was in a quandary as to what to be done with it.

He shared this concern with us 2 days later. We told him since the Pup is small, it is his responsibility to take care of it till it grows up.
The most difficult job was to take the Pup for a walk in the morning. Jim had found out that the dog during its initial days should be trained properly and that daily morning walk is a must for it. It served dual purpose -
1) It helps the dog to relieve itself in the morning.
2) It sharpens the dog inherent guarding senses.

Sim had to get up early in the morning so as to take the Pup for walk. Sometimes the dog woke up earlier and will began to bark so to signal the morning time. He got so relied on the dog that he wont look at the watch but just assume that its the time for the walk.

Once Jim returned home around 2:30am in the morning after a late night work. While coming in, he mistakenly kept his leg on the Dog's tail and it gave a short bark. Jim usually sleeps immediately after coming home,so he just lay on his bed and within 5 mins was sleeping off peacefully. Meanwhile hearing the dog's bark, Sim got up and readied himself to take the dog out. The dog which was being taken out earlier than usual was unhappy and it emitted short barks to show its disapproval. Usually when we take the dog out, we usually see few people jogging or running. But since it was a bit earlier,Sim found no one in the streets. He rather commented to himself that its strange that people have become quite lazy now. Sim had to withdraw money from ATM. He went into one and took some money. While he was coming out, A night security person saw him and he got curious as to what a person was doing in the ATM at that time. He asked Sim what he was doing to which Sim said that he was taking the dog for a walk. He asked the security guard if he had come for walking himself as he was seeing him for the first time.

Saying so,he went on in his way. But the guard suspicion levels were on high, he started stalking behind Sim to find where he is going.Sim thought that maybe some Psychopath was stalking him and he started running back to home. The guard came behind Sim till our flats, till our flat security person confirmed that Sim was living in the flats and was no danger to anyone. Thus Sim came home after a 1 hr walk and retired to his bed immediately. The dog started barking around 4:30 indicating the time for walk. Sim couldnt believe his ears. He shoo-shooed the dog away yet couldnt withstand the dog's Rocky like persistence. Grudgingly he took the dog outside for one more round, leaving our flat security guard little confused. The dog definitely enjoyed its morning walk, yet Sim grudge against the dog remained and he resolved to give the dog away to Blue Cross.



Well, i feel happy atleast for the dog so that it didnt have to test its perseverance against that of Sim. We do go to see the Pup sometimes in the weekend and the last we heard it was adopted by a married couple. So that was a happy ending for the Pup.As for Sim, he was able to sleep peacefully with no disturbances. He used to remark sometimes that his intuition had told him that beings with less than 6 sense shouldnt be trusted on a long relationship and asked us for our comments.

All we could say was - No comments !!! ;)

Adventures of Rim,Jim and Sim - Sim brings Home a Dog

Before you start wondering with why Sim bringing home a Dog has to occupy a chapter in our evergreen memoirs of life,a bit of history will be of much use in shedding light on the incident which was unthinkable in our lives.It would be wrong to say that Sim hated Dogs; To tell that Sim repulsed Dogs with every cell of his body would come somewhat nearer in describing his attitude towards dogs. Knowing this i feel you could understand the magnanimous of Sim when he adopted a dog as his pet.

It all started with Sim 3rd grade Science class and his attempts to understand the difference between 5 sense and 6 sense species. When we was in his 3rd grade, his Science teacher when talking on some topic struck upon this topic of difference between humans and animals. I know talking about these kind of topics in 3rd grade is somewhat strange,yet maybe the Science teacher wanted her students to be advanced in their thinking... Anyhow,when all the basic differences had been told by the students(Sim claims he had also made his own contribution. His point - Animals have 4 legs whereas Humans have 2 legs), the teacher elaborated further saying that Humans have 6 senses whereas animals have 5 senses.



Sim was bowled over by the thought that 1 sense can make that big difference. Anyhow, before Sim let his imagination go flying, the teacher explained how the 6th sense mattered. She went on to explain that other than the five basic senses, seeing, feeling, smelling, hearing and tasting every human has sixth sense, that sense of other-worldliness, a connection to something more and greater than their physical senses are able to perceive.I assume it would have impacted Sim profoundly to know that he is in possession of an extra sense, which the poor animals haven't been bestowed upon.

And guess what he did... As curious he ever was he decided to test if really the other animals possessed this extra-sense or not. He reached this conclusion after 2 weeks of deep thinking. To think that a 3rd grade child can think for 2 week on a single topic is unheard of, yet that's what makes Sim different. He was a prodigy in is own way.He decided to go ahead with his experiment plan. The only mistake little Sim made was with regards to the timing and the 'object' on which he experimented.

Sim's neighbor had a dog, a German Shepherd a little bigger than a pup size. Sim plan was to enter his neighbors house when the dog would be sleeping. I think the word 'perceive' in his Science teacher's explanation of 6th sense was taken as such by Sim and he reasoned that if he enters the house successfully it would mean the dog has no 6th sense and his teachers theory would be proved. He was so confident of the theory of the 5 senses of the dog that he overlooked the fact that dogs are meant to guard homes and have a special sense for that.Anyhow,our Child prodigy Sim silently tiptoed to his neighbors home in the afternoon when he was sure that everyone inside the home will be asleep and the dog would also be having his afternoon nap. His plan was to go in the house and come out silently without the Dog finding it out. He tiptoed silently till the open veranda before the house and climbed the stairs and would have had just touched the door, when disaster struck. The dog's mighty sense sensed an intruder and it leapt on Sim.



Fortunately for Sim the dog had been tied and the rope size restriction saved the day for Sim. He escaped with 3 dog bites and barking sounds very close to his ears which left him in a dazed state. I think the dog would have been happier to gift Sim few more of its juicy bites but for the house-owner who rushed down and saved Sim. Sim's explanation that he came there looking for a ball satisfied everyone. But
since that day, Sim got a suspicion that Dog also possess 6th sense. My reasoning to him that if the Dog had possessed 6th sense, then it would have bite its own rope binding him and would have taken few extra bites of him failed to convince him.

And from then on,Sim developed a revulsion against dogs that would have prompted the Dog's community to sign a peace-treaty with him, had it known this. But as in all cases, Sim had a weakness. His desire to impress girls ensured he signed a new peace treaty with the dog's species. It all started when a girl joined his company as a new employee. Sim considered her the most beautiful girl(which he considers every girl on a routine basis) and began to trouble us with his pathetic odes to the girl back in our room.

Someone had said that Life is like a chess game and it plays an unexpected move which would leave you dazed. Destiny had similar plans for Sim. That girl turned out to be living in the same locality as ours. The brilliant destiny move was that she loved dog's and she owned one which she took for walking daily to the nearby park. A cute Pomeranian. Sim's revulsion of dogs had to take a back seat and his decision to do the unthinkable - adopting a pet dog was influenced by an single incident which changed his life and the poor dogs' life for ever.

The Adventures of Rim,Jim and Sim - Sim goes Gyming - Part I !!

Promises are made to be broken. And here Iam breaking a promise which i made to Sim. Well, Iam not actually breaking a promise. Its months since this happened. Someone had said that a Promise is as good as when it happens. As time passes by, its not a promise anymore. It becomes a memory. and you can always recall some-thing from memory. So here Iam following that philosophy of recalling from my memory (and not breaking a promise. mind it ! ). Not to forget the effort i made in convincing Sim about putting his story into words. Though he was a bit adamant initially, saying that the story may undermine his image, i was able to point to him the fact that noo matter what he did, his face is never going to appear in the newspapers/magazines.




Alternatively, he has a chance to put down his face in a story and might be considered for knighthood someday when a benign kings comes to know of the Mighty Sim's chronicles. I think the idea of Knighthood, was too tempting for Sim to neglect.So here Iam penning down another chronicle from our life, working for some others person's knighthood. (Life is unfair sometimes !! ). Since everyone is convinced that Iam recalling from my memory and have indeed not broken any promises, let me go through the formal nuances of explaining what happened.

All was fine till one day, Sim had this strange notion of having six packs. You see recently there was a craze of six packs.,. you can call it SixPacko-mania.,. Just because some actors appeared in a movie with a six pack, and had a body like a greek warrior, everyone wants to emulate him. i havent been able to understand how a six pack will improvise someone's look in real life. What motivation spurs this craze for a six pack body etc.(exception being you wanting to impress someone). I had always thought of Sim as a connoisseur in the taste of woman. (To the extent he had created a separate Club for giving tips on making gf and retaining them,back at college). Yet sharp minds get blunt sometimes. The same was the case with him.

Once when he was out for a movie with a girl, the girl had remarked that the hero looked stunning with a hot body. The fact was that the girl was trying to tease him up and was playing with him, yet Sim was much smitten about the girl that he took her remarks too literally. At this juncture, it is pertinent to know the physical anatomy of Sim. Sim was a kinda normal looking guy.,. No great shapes or such.Well, there used to be a slab of fat hanging around his stomach as a circus ring. Chubby chap will be more apt to describe him !! He had a great sense of humor and so called gracious nature made him a connoisseur in making many girls as his friends. And when the girl had made this remark, in his efforts to impress her,he convinced himself that he will go to gym and get himself into a good shape.

On that day, Me and Jim were back at home, idling away the time. We were looking for a nice topic to talk upon when someone knocked the door. Some say, Opportunities dont knock and come, yet i disagree with that. We opened the door and one look at Sim confirmed the fact that he was the perfect opportunity for us to idle away the time.We welcomed him in and were surprised to find him dull. Generally Sim entertains us with stories of his adventures/mis-adventures with the girls and how he played the knight in armour etc. Some of the stories sound so unbelievable that one will be tempted to believe that his life was a remake of the Hindi Bollywood movies.,.Anyhow, we detected his infelicitous situation we asked him whats was the matter. He then unwinded himself and explained the whole situation and told us his decision to go for Gyming. I was tempted to tell him that the girl would have been talking in a lighter sense and there was no need for him to do such a big sacrifice( Wondering how its a sacrifice, wait and see !! ).

The reaction from Jim was far away from being enthusiastic. He just said "Buddy,April is yet to come". He had assumed that Sim was kidding about this one. But the determined and sober face of Sim convinced him that he indeed wanted to go to Gym. It was a bit hard for Jim to digest this,as he had been trying to pull Sim to gym along with him. Yet Sim had been comfortable sleeping in his bed, and had found no immediate motivation.,. Yet a girl had come and with a single comment had made him to join Gym. Sim said that its not only because of the girl but also because he wanted to maintain his shape. (albeit he was lying slightly) and since Jim had prior experience of going to Gym and is still going he can help him in it. Jim refused to take him along with him citing the fact that since his words were not respected, its equivalent to him being not respected and that Sim can go to a different gym.

So i was left all alone in over seeing their bickerings and finally it was agreed that Jim will be a consultant to Sim to determine if he really needed to go to Gym. He asked Sim to touch down the floor without bending his knees. Sim tried doing it but as much he tried he was able to reach only to his knee level and not below that. Jim exclaimed "Man, you should have been in Gym, 8 months back. You may get a Heart attack any moment". This was because Jim had consulted a health specialist few years back and he went through this routine and it seems the specialist had told him about the exercise and explained that not able to touch one's feet , means his obesity levels had reached high levels, a indication of upcoming heart problems. Since then, Jim considers himself to be a health Specialist and he remarked casually that Sim's day's were counted as he was not able to touch the knee itself. What Sim had forgot was that he had had a heavy dinner and that his stomach was full.,. In that situation any person would have found it hard to touch their knees.,. (Sim remembered the fact, 3 months after he left Gyming and told us about this.)

Anyhow, that remark from Jim, motivated to take up the Gyming as soon as possible and he swiftly went outside remarking that he will be back soon. He was gone in a puff, that neither me or Jim had any time to reply. Sim was back again, in 1 hour with a Gym's brochure waving in his hands as if he was waving a Akomeogi (or Japanese folding fan). He said he had enrolled in a special fast course Gym session which will began from tomorrow and that he will be in a good shape in 3 months. And yes, for the first he told us his original weight. You see there is a electronic weight m/c nearby our home.

Whenever we used to pass across that, Sim used to stand on it and then put a coin into the machine.The machine will give his weight printed in a paper. Sim had an unrealistic way of convincing himself of his realistic weight. He used to see his weight in the paper and then remark. hey how much will my shoes weigh. he then answered himself that it will weigh 200 gms each and then deduct 400 gms from the total weight. Then he will say that the jeans pant he was wearing would add another few hundred grams. Then his watch added few grams.,. Likewise he will deduct around 1.5-2 kgs from the total weight.The total weight will come around 93 kg(after so much deductions.) He will happily remark that he knew that the machine was defective and then he will reduce another 4-5 kg. Then he will suggest to himself that he need to increase his weight slightly so as to have a proper weight-height ratio.

I had witnessed this umpteen number of times and it always surprised me as to how he can convince himself of his weight without ever feeling guilty !! Yet that was Optimistic Sim for you !!
But today while he was returning after getting the Gym's brochures, he repeated the similar ritual of standing on the machine and putting in the coin. Surprising was the fact that he read the actual values in the paper and didnt indulge in any gimmicks.,. He came back home and showed us the paper slip which said the weight to be 94 kgs. That when i realized that this guy is up to something serious.,.
