First of all, on the eve of Republic Day, instead of the mundane Quiz on Indian freedom struggle or politics, let us focus on something more relevant today. The Environment and its continued destruction by us...

Before that a small update for the readers. IIML hosted its Management fest - MANFEST, from 22nd to 24th Jan. The special highlights being the Auto conclave attended by Auto industry stalwarts and the Gaming conclave. The last day had performance by Kailash Kher who mesmerized the crowd who were left stupefied by his performance. The weather was unexpectedly cold but the whole colIege withstood the cold wave and ensured that all the activities went on well. There is something interesting which i wanted to share with you all.


I and few of my friends @ IIML (Kiran shah, Uday Sankar, Soumya, Madhavi) had organized a environment awareness campaign). We put on a stall and posters/charts on how to save environment and reduce the global warming which is increasing at a horrendous rate... We had a caption writing contest and a general quiz on environment. I would like to thank my other friends who had been involved and showed active interest in arranging this activity, namely Arava Nirmal(helping out in the Operations), Ashutosh Sardesai(for setting Quiz questions).

Now, coming back to the main purpose of this article, iam sharing the environment quiz with you. I will be publishing the answers along with the photo of the people who got the maximum correct answers.

"Do Aankhen Barah Haath" - Excellent movie showcasing Transformation Leadership !

Film historians regard the period from 1940-1960’s as the Golden age of Indian cinemas. Many of the acclaimed movies were produced during this era. We had films espousing social themes like Guru Dutt films 'Pyaasa and 'Kaagaz Ke Phool' and the Raj Kapoor films 'Awaara' and 'Shree 420'. Some of the epic films produced during this time include Mehboob Khan's 'Mother India' and K. Asif's 'Mughal-e-Azam'. If you have started wondering why Iam giving a recap of three decades old movies, here is the reasoning . I was going through the movie collection I have, when I stumbled upon the movie “Do Aankhen Barah Haath”. Very few movies in Indian history has the distinction of inspiring Hollywood films. “Do Aankhen Barah Haath” has that distinction of inspiring the Hollywood film The Dirty Dozen. It also has the distinction of being the first Indian film to win a Golden Globe Award.



Do Aankhen Barah Haath (Two Eyes & Twelve Hands,Hindi )is a 1957 Hindi film directed by the Indian film director V.Shantaram, who also starred in the film. It is considered one of the classics of Hindi cinema and is based on morals of Gandhian philosophy. The film was inspired by the story of an 'open-prison' experiment in the princely state of Oundh near Pune. In 2005, Indiatimes Movies ranked the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. The film was later remade into the Telugu color film Maa Daivam (1976) starring NTR and Jayachitra and has been remade in Tamil film ‘Palandu Valga’ starring MGR.

My reasons for writing this article. Being a hardcore believer in innate human potential and transforming people,I feel “Do Aakhen Barah Haath” is an exemplary movie for showcasing transformational leadership and every future leader/manager has important learning in the movie. I wouldn’t recount the entire movie but provide a brief glimpse of the important scenes in the movie. A jail warden (Film principal protagonist) wants to rehabilitate six deadly prisoners. He takes these six notorious, surly murderers to a dilapidated country and makes them work hard with him on the farm. He aims to transform/rehabilitate them through hard work and kindly guidance. His senior Superindent comments that his task is impossible and that he can’t transform the criminals and eventually he would fail in his venture. Yet, he unflinchingly goes ahead with his plan and successfully rehabilitates them into good citizens.



As said before, significant learning for future managers/leaders are as follows:

1. You don’t need extra-ordinary people to do extra ordinary things. A group of ordinary but passionate people can do extra –ordinary work. We had a real life example shown by Shane Warne when he lead a group of unknown young cricketers to glory by winning the 20-20 IPL cup. So as Managers,just believe in this. All you need is a group of passionate people.,. Talent can always be groomed.

2. All along we hear about trust and faith between members in a team. The movie shows, how a leader/Manager must lead his team and set examples. In the movie, the warden has complete trust on the six prisoners and treats them as his equal. Over a period of time, the prisoners began to realize this and start to reciprocate on equal terms.

3. The movie is an excellent example of “Pygmalion effect”. (The Pygmalion effect refers to the phenomenon in which the greater the expectation placed upon people,the better they perform).When you start expecting people to do things in a particular way, if you are persistent enough in your belief, then people will eventually began to behave accordingly. This holds a great opportunity for Leaders/Managers. Belief in the capability of your team members and give them the autonomy to express themselves. They will deliver much beyond your expectations.

4. While working along with members on a project/work, it isn’t sufficient if the focus is just on the work. Iam not saying that one shouldn’t focus on the work, after all Work is the main reason for the existence of the team. What I mean to stress on is the fact that there has to be a bonding within the team members and equal focus on communication and helping. That will benefit the team in a myriad of ways.

5. Lastly, no matter what people around you say, as long as you have an idea and are passionate about it, go ahead and follow your dreams. You are bound to be successful if you are faithful to the idea. ;)

Chronicles of Nainital :The Tal, The Mall and the Fall - Day 2

Tourists are generally considered sources of revenue. It’s been that way for so long that tourism has been actively encouraged by governing bodies. Till now, the prominent means by which any tourist place earns income has been through the following ways – spending on one’s accommodation, food etc, revenue due to site seeing and shopping in some places. The ingenuity of Madhavi was such that she added new categories to those existing ones. Iam not sure if that would qualify as a discovery or an invention, whatever it maybe, Madhavi’s contribution to tourism industry will be remembered for ages to come. Coming to the point, the new sources of revenue which Madhavi identified & generously contributed towards were the ‘Electricity and Tele-Communication”. Iam sure that both the Nainital electricity department and the Airtel’s Nainital branch would have garnered huge revenues in our 3 days stay @ Nainital. Once we returned back after the Day 1 site seeing, we were tired and eager to hit the sack as soon as we can. But then there was one person who was involved in some serious business. Iam not sure if Madhavi was in commando’s unit. She took out her cell phone and started speaking over the phone, - Madhavi here, over and out. You hear me. She would dial every contact she had in her phone memory. She would then narrate the day’s incident + her triumphant visit of all stores in one particular place. Then the cycle would repeat for the next person. But since we were at a high altitude, the signal was comparatively weak and it would come and go. She would then take her cell phone and walk along the areas where the signal strength was better. Iam sure she would have occupied the entire bandwidth which the company would have had. (There was a power cut around 9pm, once we returned back to the hotel. I wonder who would have warned the Nainital electricity board about the impending danger. But as callous Indians always are, they didn’t heed to the warning and the current came back in sometime.

After her secret conversations, she would then put her cell phone to charge for the whole night..,. [When we had arrived at Nainital was a peak season time. And no wonder the hotel room rents were sky high. For a small 2 bed room, the charge was 750 Rs (with Geyser facility), without Geyser – Rs.600. At that time, I had been thinking that we had overpaid the hotel owner. But then looking back now, it doesn’t seem a bad deal. The reason being the extra money the owner had taken away from us, would be peanuts when compared to that month’s electricity bill. Iam sure he would still be left scratching his head when he would have a look at his monthly bill and wonder the reason behind it.] Iam not sure about it, but if you do get a local Nainital newspaper, Iam sure this incident would have found a special mention.

Day 2 started early and we got ready by 9am. After a short breakfast, we went on to see the Naina Peak. There were few people who were quoting the charge for the Naina peak trip. He had a list of chosen places and then each place had separate charges. One could choose the places he wished to visit and pay the amount. There were 6 places in total and the amount was Rs.490. We would have agreed to it readily except that the Jahnavi effect had influenced us too. So the sleeping lion within each of us was aroused and we took it up to fight for the best bargain. The intensity to strike a best bargain was so much that even Ajitha, who normally is so active and jumpy (that once she stands in a place, she will ensure that there is a least displacement of her from tat place, unless of an absolute necessity) even chipped in and contributed her bit in bargaining with the tour person. Finally after successive attempts to strike a deal, the tour person was ready to accommodate the whole Naina peak site seeing for 320 bucks. Madhavi, who by virtue of being along with Jahnavi has the maximum rub off effect, wanted a bargain for 300 bucks. But we had also to consider the fact that the tour fellow had a family to feed and we didn’t want to become a reason for him becoming unemployed. We agreed to Rs.320, once Jahnavi finally nodded her approval conveying the fact that you amateurs have a long way to go, anyhow for first timers, this is the best you could have done.

An Omni van arrived and it took us to the uphill place. Around 40-50 horses were standing along the path way. The horses would be our mode of travel during the peak climbing. Each of us climbed (rather were helped to climb) on a horse each. One free advice which I would like to give, is never let know the horse-owner or the tour operator who is having the money. Iam not sure how those people got to know it, they had their own way of paying us back for the hard bargain we had with them. They helped me onto a horse and when I was about to feel good about it and was commenting to my friends to be careful, the horse started moving. It was all well, until the time, I realized that my horse didn’t had any escorts while my friend’s horse had an escort each. You have to be there to understand my situation. The pathway was very narrow and it was a mountainous path. My horse was supposed to lead the other horses. While all my friends had a person holding on to the reins of the horse, I was left dangling on to my horse, as it starting moving. On both the sides you can see the deep pitfall. A wrong step and one can as well enjoy a whole year in a hospital ward.



I hadn’t really cared about how many senses the horses had, but at that moment I was praying to God to give them 7 senses, so that it remains in a sane mind and sticks to its path. While my friends were admiring the beauty along the way, I was left holding onto my dear life and the rein and mumbling ancient Mayan’s incantations!! ! The journey was in a way enlightening too, because the horse would take a path which would be easier for it. The road was strewed with big stones, hence the horse would move over to the side of the road which had plain path. But,I learnt how to control and make the horse turn left/right and make it stop. We stopped at Land’s end, Tiffin Top (from where we had a beautiful view of the Gigantic Himalayan ranges) and saw Amitabh Bachan's school.



One thing worth mentioning here is the agility of Ajitha which was simply amazing. The moment she climbed on to the horse, she confidently started directing her horse along the mountain path and gestured continuously to her horse to go the right way. And whenever she would see a scenic place, she would immediately get down and then ask us to follow her. She would then go and pose for the photo and after happily taking few shots would continue her ride. (The last 4-5 sentences were the yearning of Ajitha’s inner soul. As said before, Ajitha was an epitome for stillness and a great deal of lessons has to be learnt from her for any person looking forward to living a spiritualistic life. Wise sage recommend that there has to be stillness in the thoughts, but then Ajitha went ahead and displayed stillness in both her thoughts and actions. She lent a new meaning to the word ‘tranquility’. Anyhow, for personalized coaching, you better contact her. Then we descended back on a steep road. The horses were being literally made to suffer and it was disheartening to see that they were taken for a next immediate journey as soon as we came back.



We had already arranged a Qualis for the trip to see all the lakes in and around Nainital, namely the - Sattal, Bhimtal, Bhowali, Naukuchiyatal and Hanuman Garg Temple. Sat Tal or seven lakes is located at a distance of 20 KM from Nainital. Bhimtal is named after one of the five Pandva brothers is the biggest lake of the area. At a distance of 22 KM from Nainital this lake is 1701 meter in length and 454 meter in width. There is an old temple by the side of the lake. We planned to have our lunch in any of the Tal places. The mountain route was awesome and the scenery along the pathway was too beautiful. Our first destination was Bhimtal. Jahnavi and Ajitha were feeling tired so we left them in the car and went around having a look. There were a number of ducks in the lake, and few were sun bathing. Uday was able to shoot a close range video at the same time giving instructions to the duck on giving different poses, to the extent that any director with a frame saying ‘action’ might have been prompted to get in touch with Uday for movie lessons.



We returned back by 7, as there is a rule that vehicles coming into Nainital after 8 wouldn’t be allowed in. Due to the approaching New Year eve in a day or two, the security was increased in many places and we had our vehicle checked at 2 checkpoints. We got down at the far end of the Mall road, and then started our way back. Iam not sure if you have seen a forward which says that when a Man wants to do a shopping, he enters a shop does his shopping and gets it done. The same thing, when a woman wants to do, she goes into every store which doesn’t have the intended merchandise, and then enters the targeted shop finally. We had that happening for real. The girls would be following us when suddenly they would vanish in thin air. We would look around for them to realize that they had entered a shop and would be gauging some shop’s merchandise. After sometime we got used to the trend but couldn’t do anything. The girls were insistent of blessing every shop on the road so I and Uday left them to heed to their hobby and we went ahead.

I have to convey my gratitude to Jahnavi for sharing her knowledge on gift selection. I had wanted to buy a small gift for someone. I don’t know why but anything I choose was branded ‘cheesy’. For e.g., I would take a small memento with a heart symbol and Jahnavi would look at it sardonically and then reproach me having choosing such a silly thing. Somehow, I was able to master (hopefully) the art of selecting gifts. We purchased some souvenirs and had a hot dinner at a Punjabi dhaba, then got back to our den. As I drifted off to a peaceful slumber, I could hear a voice – “Roger, over and out. Madhavi here. Can you hear me?”

Came across a forward which had these lessons. Thought it fit to share with you all.

Life is need base never want base. Desires have no ends. Simplicity is way of life and Indian culture highly stresses on simple living and high thinking, and this is the way of life: ‘Legs down to earth and eyes looking beyond the sky’


9. Industrial Leadership
Dean of the institute in 3 idiots is showing very typical leadership. He has his own principles, values and ideology, and he leads the whole institute accordingly. This is an example of current institutional leadership. In the present scenario, most of the institutes are fixed in a block or Squarish thinking.


10. Love Is Time & Space Free
Love is not time bound and space bound. It is very well demonstrated in this movie same love was demonstrated by Krishna and Meera. Love is border free, time free and space free.


11. Importance Of One Word In Communication
If communication dies, everything dies. Each word has impact and value in communication. One word if used wrongly or emphasized wrongly or paused at a wrong place in communication what effect it creates and how is it affected is demonstrated very well in this movie.


12. Mediocrity Is Penalized
Middle class family or average talent or average institute is going to suffer and has to pay maximum price in the life if they do not upgrade their living standards. To be born poor or as an average person is not a crime but to die as an average person with middle class talent is miserable and if you are unable to optimize your potentiality and die with unused potentiality then that is your shameful truth. One should not die as a mediocre. He/she has to bring out genius inside him/her and has to use his/her potentiality to the optimum level

A Day with Prof Sunil Handa, an Entrepreneur Evangelist

We hear about so called Evangelist, in different fields. There are umpteen numbers of such folks. But there are few people who redefine Evangelism itself. They live, eat , breathe and preach what they love. You meet them once and it changes your life in a unique way. I have had the fortune to meet few such people. One such person who had come down to our campus is Mr. Sunil Handa, Professor at IIM Ahmedabad who takes LEM (Laboratory for Entrepreneurial Motivation) in IIM-A. When I saw the workshop invitation from IIM-Lucknow’s E-cell wing, I assumed it to just to be another so called workshop sessions. Except that this mail stated that he is not only a seasoned entrepreneur, he has inspired and motivated many of his students to take the untrodden path and become entrepreneurs themselves. I have been playing with this thought for sometime about taking the path of entrepreneur and making my mark, yet there has been this ‘What If” scenario in my mind. What if I fail, What if I don’t succeed… So I thought why not go and listen to a wise man and hear it from the horse’s mouth itself – what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.



Prof.Sunil Handa started the workshop with the question why have you people come for this workshop. Few said they had come to listen to him. Someone said that he had been having an idea in his mind for a long time and that he wanted to hear his speech to be inspired. Prof Handa called it the “Kick in the Ass” requirement.

And then he started sharing about his experience as an entrepreneur. One thing which stood out of his speech is the fact that the guy is passionately passionate about ‘Entrepreneurship”. Every word and every action of his would make you think and consider Entrepreneurship as your career option. The workshop he took was of three sessions of two hour duration. I can’t put down all that he shared with us (mainly coz I don’t remember all that was shared), yet Iam sharing the important highlights which he said about entrepreneurship.

Foremost, the point he said was that it’s best to become an entrepreneur as soon as you can. Few of the people had asked if it’s better to work for few years (2-3 years) , save some money, build network and then try out the waters. For which Prof. Handa said that the two years at this time of our life is equivalent to 20 years of his time. The energy, madness, passion and enthu which we have at this moment will fade as time goes on. Not to mention, the additional responsibilities which we would be having. Hence, this is the best time ! About the money saving/network, he said that at this time, the money we would end saving would be miniscule which can be arranged anyhow. And the contacts aim to make, would be of our similar profile, to be of any major help. Overall, his message was that the two years not is the GOLDEN period of your life. Leverage it!!!

Another important message which he had shared was the fact that whichever business you want to start on, make sure you are the KING in that business. Nobody in this world should be more knowledgeable than you in that field. Know the in and outs of the business, its working, your competitors etc. The moment you are qualified to that extent, you will be the best in your business too.

Then he told us the importance of Partnership. Partnership is the most important thing while starting out, hence choose your partner wisely. He advised that Partners should have complementary skills, instead of having someone you like, or someone you gel well with. He said that Partnership is a deep and meaningful bond which one has to share. So choose carefully and in a wise manner.

He also said the two commonly repeated phrases which a Entrepreneur hears often. First, is whenever you suggest to do something in new way, people will give you one answer – “we cant do it that way – Coz people have never done it that way!” Secondly, most of the time things will go on as they have been going on. Be it be any process to manufacture something, or way of ordering things etc. unless you question it, it wouldn’t change. And questioning is what every entrepreneur should do. Because, most often, we can find new ways of doing things much better. The standard reply people will give when you ask them why weren’t you told that this could be done before is – “You never asked me”

I will end up by saying the one thing he said which stood out in his workshop. You all would have heard about it, yet it’s the ‘Elixir’ for an Entrepreneur. It is “Never give up”. In the business and in life, you will face many situations when obstacles seems insurmountable, you don’t find answers to your problems, and nothing seems to be happening. At those moments, remember this – NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP ! Some thing would definitely happen., if you keep persisting, the problem is gonna yield sometime. But just ensure that you NEVER YIELD to the PROBLEM.

Thus ended the wonderful six hour session workshop by Prof.Sunil Handa. Just want to convey my sincere thanks to him and hopefully one day will give my Guru Dakshana to him by charting along the same path and making my mark. He is one hell of an Evangelist !!!

Chronicles of Nainital – The Tal, The Mall and the Fall – Day 1

This article is about the adventures of 5 crackpots who decided to tour Nainital at the time when the climate is at its chilliest. To debrief on the Article title – our Nainital Tour can be captured in those 3 days Our 3 day tour was spend on each of the place indicated by the words – Tal, Mall and Fall. ‘Tal’ means Lake as our first day was spend on checking out the different Tals – Bhimtal, Naukuchia Tal,Sattal etc ; ‘Mall’ stands for the Mall road famous for the shops lined across the length of the road – a Shopaholic dream place ; ‘Fall’ means the Jim Corbett Fall which we saw on the 3rd day, on our return journey to Lucknow via Ramnagar. Before we hit the intricacies of the 3 day activities, here is how it all started.

We had a 1 week holiday after our 2nd end term exams. As I was not going back to my hometown, there was a plan of touring some place in Northern India. Uday, my colleague along with his friends were also entertaining the idea of touring some place. We initially had two choices – Nepal or Nainital. But due to long road travel in the case of Nepal, we decided on Nainital due to the ease of travelling.
Hence began the chronicles of the Five – Madhavi, Ajitha, Jahnavi, Uday and Me. While packing our stuff, I enquired my friend Uday about the night journey in train and asked him if I should carry any extra Quilts to fight the cold. We had a Quilt packed up but I know from experience that night travel in train usually leaves one shivering. My friend Uday confidently replied that he was taking an additional ‘blanket’ which he supposedly had used for the entire 4 years @ NIT Warangal during his graduation. He went on to say how chill the climate used to be in NIT Warangal and how the blanket had served him as a shield protecting the fighter. I was completely flattered by the marvelous qualities of his special ‘blanket’ and didn’t tell him anything. We started off on Dec 27th from our college (IIM Lucknow) to Aishbagh railway station. We reached the station an hour earlier and had a light dinner near the station.

The train had already come by then, hence we settled comfortably in our seats. The cold was seeping in gently and I was sure the night would be more chiller. We spend some time reminiscing the exam week and how we had screwed up the exams. After an hour of chit chat we decided to sleep. Mine was a middle berth and Uday’s had the lower berth. I took the Quilt and wrapped it around myself.,. I would have resembled the Egyptian Mummy, except the quilt was blue in color.Aided by the slow movement of the train along with the warmth of the quilt, I dozed off peacefully. I got up around 4am thinking that I had an exam to give in few hours (Aftermath of the exam s effect). Then realizing that it was a bad dream , I decided to go back to my nice sleep. Then it occurred to me, that Uday would have finally deployed his shield – ‘The Blanket’. I peeped down to see the prized thing. I couldn’t believe what I saw.

Uday had said that the blanket had served him well for 4 years under extreme cold conditions. But it never occurred to me that he could be having such a sophisticated blanket. What I could see was a frozen body with a curtain cloth lying above it. I have heard of the concept of warm blooded and cold blooded but to see the technology being improved so as to integrate that concept in a blanket left me speechless. Maybe the blanket morphs one in to a cocoon like shell which is warm inside and cold outside so as to match the outside environment. I couldn’t imagine how my friend would have gotten the complicated technology!!!! Then my friend opened his eyes. I realized it then my friend was shivering and had almost frozen… The ‘so called blanket’ was the curtain cloth which I had spotted lying over him. To this moment, he claims that it is a blanket, hence iam putting the image for yourself to judge… But, beware you might assume it to be blanket from the year 2050!!!



We reached Lalkuwa by 6:30. Nainital which is on the top is around 70 kms from Lalkuwa. We had few vehicle owners waiting outside and offering to take us to Nainital. A person came and offered us a Tavera for 700 bucks. We bargained with him and came down to 630. We were still eyeing for more bargain because there is an option of paying per seat (60 bucks) which would cost us very less. Then another person offered us an Indica for 400 bucks. Seeing this, the Tavera person also lowered his price to 400 bucks. You never know how the localities can dupe the tourist.



Since we had arrived at Nainital at a busy time (approaching New Year eve), the whole place was crowded and hotels were booked up completely. we saw few hotels charging around 1200-1500 for one day for a 2 bedroom. Finally we were able to find a hotel accommodation @ Mallital for Rs 750. We hit the sack immediately and rested for around 2 hours. Then we refreshed then started the outing for the day. We had our lunch in one of the hotel… the food wasn’t that great. It seemed people in this part don’t know what spicy food is. Even in the biryani, there was no salt or spice. Every place indeed has its own unique cuisine!!! Then we proceeded for the boat ride at the Naini Lake. The lake scenery was just awesome. With the lush greenery around you and the Mountains providing the backdrop, the boat ride was a pleasant experience. There was a small temple in one of the shores to which we paid a short visit.

By then it was 4:30… Any group having girls in it would will get to know eventually about the keenness of the girls observation power. No matter where you are, the girls will eventually find a shopping place. It’s more like intuitive power. And in case of Nainital, there was a whole road scattered with shops (Mall Road) beckoning them. Hence, we eventually hit upon the shopping. I and Uday got our-self few woolen wears like gloves, caps.,. It would have taken us around 15 minutes to check out different varieties and decide which one we wanted to purchase. Most notable to mention here is the detailed process which the girls followed while making the purchase. It seemed to me as if they weren’t making a purchase but were scouting the place for something. The whole process would pass through different stages. In the First stage, scouting phase - Ajitha and Jahnavi would enter the shop and check out the products. They will look at it from all direction, and angles (top, bottom, side way) and eventually ask the price of it. Then the second stage would begin, the Bargaining phase – where the race to hit upon the best deal would start. Based on how satisfied they were with the bargain, the process would enter the third phase known as Re-Scouting phase. The probability of the occurrence of this phase depends on the Satisfaction Index. This index is a function of the price rates quoted by the shopkeeper and the extent to which they were satisfied with the bargain. If the satisfaction is less, this Phase would be kick-started. (I, for sure have no idea about what is the reference point of the satisfaction index. You better contact the girls for that precious knowledge) So, in this phase, the girls would realize that there are many more products to be seen. Then the second phase continues again. Now you might think that the story ends here. That’s where the surprise element is. The fifth stage, Madhavi would enter the stage and would go in and check the validity of the bargain; more like a supervisor in charge.. The sixth stage concludes with the purchase being done.



I and Uday wouldn’t have minded it much for the six stage process. Our only concern was when the process was repeated in umpteen stores. So it eventually ended up with I and Uday would start admiring the store location, observing the stores layout etc to keep ourself busy. Probably, we would have observed close to 20 shops. Of course we would have gotten the opportunity to observe many more stores hadn’t it been the regular norm of the shops in Nainital to shut down by 9’0 clock. Anyhow, we had flooded ourself with so many facts that I and Uday decided to check out something else. We went to get some winter cloths leaving the girls to scout the remaining shops until 9’0 clock.

One thing worth mentioning is our plan to go to Jim Corbett. We were considering going to Jim Corbett on the final day of our stay before coming back. Since it was a new year eve, it was already crowded.,. We went to a referred travel agency to check out the availability of the Safari tickets. Here, we saw the talent of one of trip members come to fore. Jahnavi, has such persuasive skills that she would make our Communications prof very proud. We had ‘Persuasion’ as one of the topic in our first term, and if there was one person who was actually following it in real life, it was she. It all started with the Travel agent quoting the price for the whole day trip. Though the rate he was quoting was quite high, we asked him to give us a better deal. The man was persisting in his view about the rates. That’s when Jahnavi entered the picture, She gave him a detailed view of the cost structure for charging per km and then went on to narrate from her experiences how and where all the rates differed depending upon the topography. The travel agent would definitely have been baffled with these facts and by the time she ended, he would have readily given away the claims to the travel office, if we had asked him to do so. Iam not sure if it was her speech or something else, he said he will give a good deal to us and would call us back later.

Anyhow, we were feeling hungry too, so me and my friend Uday took a break and went for cloth purchase leaving the girls to continue their scouting. The climate was becoming so chillier that we would have ended up purchasing all the clothes in all the shops as a means to keep us warm. I think that it is a strategy deployed by the shopkeepers., As and when we saw a shop, it occurred to us that we needed that particular woolen wear. Somehow we reached our staying place and found the next room to us, still locked. It wasn’t surprising given the fact that there was around 15-25 shops left to scout !!! We then went and had a short dinner and came back and hit the sack… Uday was persistent in having his ‘specialized’ blanket with him. I by no means didnt have any issue with that. There was iron man movie which was being telecasted in HBO. So the day peacefully ended with we, sleeping relaxingly under the warmth of the quilt and blankets and to the sound of tv playing on…
